El 8 de septiembre de 2025, el Fiscal General de Washington D.C., Brian Schwaab, presentó una demanda contra el operador de cajeros de Bitcoin, Athena Bitcoin, Inc., acusando a la empresa de lucrarse ilegalmente mediante fraudes financieros dirigidos a ancianos y grupos vulnerables. Una investigación reveló que el 93% de los depósitos en los cajeros de Bitcoin de Athena en el Distrito estaban vinculados directamente a fraudes, con una edad media de las víctimas de 71 años. Se acusa a la empresa de cobrar una tarifa oculta de hasta el 26% (muy por encima del estándar de la industria del 0.24%-3%) y de implementar una estricta política de "no reembolso" para las víctimas de fraude. La oficina del Fiscal General ha exigido que Athena cumpla con la ley, compense a las víctimas y enfrente sanciones.
