Illegal Mining Scheme Discovered in Transcarpathia Causing 949.8 Million UAH in Damages

Near Uzhhorod, a scheme of illegal andesite mining has been uncovered, causing the state damages exceeding 949.8 million UAH and leading to the destruction of 10 hectares of forest. Ukraine's Attorney General Ruslan Kravchenko reported that in 2024, the enterprise received permission for geological exploration and pilot industrial development of a deposit covering 59 hectares, but it began industrial mining. Approximately 10 hectares of forest were cleared for the quarry, and forest land was used to lay 2.6 km of power lines and install 52 poles. The extraction was carried out using blasting methods without an environmental impact assessment, with 13 instances of drilling and blasting work recorded. About 417,000 cubic meters of minerals were illegally extracted. According to tax reports, over 774,000 tons of andesite were sold, and 353,000 tons of unaccounted products valued at approximately 247 million UAH were also identified, which were sold for cash. Judicial examinations confirmed total damages exceeding 949.8 million UAH. During the investigation, conversations among the suspects about continuing to use the site were recorded, despite lawsuits from the prosecutor's office. Four participants were notified of suspicion under Part 4 of Article 240 and Part 3 of Article 209 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The investigation is ongoing.
