Solar Power Plant Launched at Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant with Capacity of 2 MW
A solar power plant with a capacity of 2 MW has started operating at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. It will supply electricity to critically important facilities at the Chernobyl site, including the New Safe Confinement and spent nuclear fuel storage facilities. The construction of the plant cost over $825,000, and the project was implemented with the support of UNDP and the governments of Lithuania and Japan. Lithuania provided 7,296 solar panels and 17 inverters, while UNDP ensured the installation and commissioning of the plant. The new plant is expected to produce over 2 million kWh of clean electricity annually, which accounts for about 5% of the annual consumption of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. This will save approximately $365,000 per year, which is planned to be directed towards upgrading equipment. The total installed capacity of solar power plants in Ukraine has reached 7.6 GW. The project at Chernobyl is the result of Ukraine's cooperation with international partners to enhance nuclear and energy security.
