Bolivia Commits to Regulate Cryptocurrencies with the IMF
The Bolivian government formalized a commitment with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to draft a regulatory and supervisory framework for cryptocurrencies, aiming to curb the illicit diversion of foreign currencies. This agreement is included in the Memorandum of Economic and Financial Policies submitted to the IMF on September 10, 2026, which groups the supervision of virtual assets with the control of monetary and exchange markets, pension risks, and the fight against money laundering. The measure responds to an economic crisis characterized by a fiscal deficit of 12% of GDP in 2025 and a public debt exceeding 80% of GDP. The adoption of cryptocurrencies has grown due to the illiquidity of dollars and capital controls, with stablecoins like USDT gaining popularity. The state plan prioritizes strengthening the fight against money laundering and the financing of terrorism, especially after Bolivia's inclusion in the FATF gray list. However, the memorandum does not set implementation deadlines or define the responsible authority. Additionally, the government is considering integrating USDT into the national payment system, seeking to enable its formal circulation for everyday transactions.
