Utility Worker Suspected of Illegal Mining in Angarsk District
In the Angarsk urban district of Irkutsk region, Igor Shemetov, an employee of the housing and communal services, is suspected of organizing an illegal crypto farm that used electricity from the Russian Ministry of Defense. The investigation established that Shemetov placed mining equipment in service premises without permission. According to the Investigative Committee, the farm operated for about a year, and the electricity bills were paid by the utility services of the military town. The income from mining remained with Shemetov. The equipment consumed significant amounts of electricity, causing substantial damage to the Ministry of Defense, although the specific amount has not been disclosed. A ban on cryptocurrency mining in the Angarsk district has been in effect since April 2025, including mining through pools. Similar restrictions have been introduced in 29 districts of the Irkutsk region and in several cities, while there are no such bans in the northern part of the region.
