Alphabet to Pay $343 Million to Settle Lawsuit in the UK
Alphabet Inc. has agreed to pay approximately $343 million (£260 million) to settle a class-action lawsuit in the UK related to inflated fees for app downloads in the Google Play store. The case was reviewed by the Competition Appeal Tribunal. Plaintiffs claimed that Google abused its dominant market position and charged excessive fees to software developers for Android devices. The parties reached an agreement before the trial, which was expected to last 10 weeks. The settlement is subject to official approval by the tribunal. Compensation for developers will amount to about $211 million (£160 million) for thousands of UK developers, while the remaining $132 million (£100 million) will cover legal costs. Alphabet did not admit any wrongdoing or legal liability as part of the settlement. The amount paid to participants will depend on their scale, ranging from $264 (£200) for small studios to several million dollars for larger companies. The lawsuit was led by law professor Barry Rogers, who initially sought $1.32 billion (£1 billion) in compensation.
