American Express Launches Intent Intelligence Framework to Drive Standards in Agent Commerce
American Express has launched the Intent Intelligence framework, which proposes a method to capture and authenticate customer purchase intent before AI agents complete transactions, integrating this intent throughout the entire transaction process. The framework is publicly available through the Amex Agentic Commerce Experiences developer toolkit. The core mechanism includes the Create Intent API, which captures customer purchase instructions and constraints, allowing customers to complete identity verification and authorization. It then generates a unique identifier, Intent ID, and Proof of Intent Token, which are used to obtain limited-use digital payment credentials in place of real card numbers, serving as control items during authorization decisions, fraud prevention, and dispute resolution. American Express stated that it is collaborating with EMVCo and the x402 Foundation to promote universal standards for agent commerce.
