Bitcoin Mining Electricity Cost of $5.68: The Pitfall of 2010 Calculations
Mining a single Bitcoin (BTC) block was calculated to cost $5.68 in electricity, according to a post on the Bitcoin forum in 2010. At that time, miners could receive a block reward of 50 BTC, but it was determined that the electricity costs alone made mining unprofitable. TTBit noted on September 7, 2010, that the computer's hash rate was 2,200 kilohashes per second (khash/s) and its power consumption was 140W. Under these conditions, it was calculated that generating one block required 47.327 kWh, and applying a rate of 12 cents per kWh resulted in an electricity cost of $5.68. He referred to this as a 'net loss.' The calculation was based on the premise that Bitcoin mining relied on central processing units (CPUs) at that time. TTBit estimated that it would take about 14 days to mine one block, calculating only the electricity costs while excluding equipment prices and maintenance fees. Forum participants soon began comparing the potential for graphics processing unit (GPU) mining. GPUs could deliver higher computational performance than CPUs while allowing for different calculations of power efficiency. As a result, it became difficult to assess mining profitability based solely on the electricity cost of one computer, and the choice of hardware emerged as a key issue. The reward structure of Bitcoin has since changed significantly, and current mining economics must consider block rewards, transaction fees, electricity prices, equipment efficiency, and mining difficulty together. Therefore, the $5.68 calculation from 2010 cannot be directly applied to current mining profitability.
