Bitcoin Rises 22%, Mining Stocks Median Only 1.8%
Bitcoin (BTC) has risen by 22% since August 17, while the stock prices of 10 out of 11 mining companies analyzed have lagged behind this increase. The median stock price increase among these 10 mining stocks was only 1.8%. Only Canaan exceeded BTC's returns, while the other 10 recorded lower increases than BTC. Core Scientific showed a performance 27% lower than BTC, and TerraWolf lagged by 24%. The reason mining stocks have not kept pace with BTC's rise is attributed to some companies transitioning their business to high-performance computing (HPC) and artificial intelligence (AI) data centers. These companies are utilizing resources previously used for BTC mining for AI computations. While this business transition can support stock prices during bearish trends in the virtual asset market, it may reduce focus on BTC mining and increase operational risks. Conversely, a structure that operates both mining and AI data centers could potentially broaden the business base in the long run. The AI transition of mining companies is related to power infrastructure allocation issues, which connect to not only expanding revenue sources but also the utilization of power and facilities. This yield gap makes it difficult to view mining companies simply as stocks linked to BTC prices.
