Eight U.S. States Sue OpenAI Over User Safety Issues
Eight U.S. states have filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, accusing the company of misleading users about the safety of ChatGPT. The state attorneys general claim that OpenAI failed to provide necessary safeguards, leading to incidents of suicide, self-harm, and violence among users, including teenagers, and that its operations violate state laws. The lawsuit from Arkansas points out that OpenAI was aware of the risks associated with its products, with leadership publicly acknowledging safety concerns and employees repeatedly expressing serious safety worries, yet the company did not take effective measures and instead accelerated the release of powerful models, prioritizing growth and profit. The states involved in the lawsuit include Arizona, Iowa, Idaho, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, and West Virginia, with all but Arizona having Republican attorneys general. The states are seeking a court order requiring OpenAI to change its safety operating model, enhance protections for children, and compensate the states for their losses.
