Greece Denies Christine Lagarde's Intervention Against Binance

Greece has denied allegations that Christine Lagarde, president of the European Central Bank (ECB), influenced the approval process for Binance. Since June 2026, crypto-asset service providers in the European Union must obtain official approval. Binance attempted to secure this approval in Greece, but the process failed. Doubts about political intervention were raised, notably by Changpeng Zhao, founder of Binance. The Wall Street Journal reported that Lagarde allegedly took a personal stance against the exchange. The Hellenic Capital Market Commission (HCMC) refuted these accusations, stating that no communication had occurred between its officials and those of the ECB. The HCMC also clarified that no directive had been received from the Greek government regarding Binance's approval. Meanwhile, Greece has registered four crypto companies in the MiCA register of the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA), bringing the total to 359 providers in the EU.
