IMF Reveals Source of El Salvador's Bitcoin Reserve Increase
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) stated that the increase in El Salvador's Bitcoin reserves was not financed by public resources. In the first review of the financing program conducted in June 2025, it was noted that the country did not use public funds to accumulate Bitcoin. The IMF emphasized that the increase was achieved through donations from private sources. Additionally, it was mentioned that the majority stake of El Salvador's state-supported Chivo Bitcoin wallet has been transferred to a private operator, with the government retaining only a minority stake. This situation is seen as a step towards reducing the state's role in the Bitcoin ecosystem as part of the agreement with the IMF. El Salvador's announcement in November 2025 that it acquired 1,090 BTC worth $100 million raised questions about compliance with the $1.4 billion financing program with the IMF. The IMF clarified that the increases in reserves were not from public spending but from private donations. El Salvador had agreed to limit public sector Bitcoin activities as part of its agreement with the IMF in December 2024. According to the country's official reserve data, El Salvador holds approximately 7,764 BTC, with a total value of around $628 million.
