India's CERT-In Warns of AI Hacking Attacks on Cryptocurrency Exchanges

The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) has flagged AI-assisted attackers targeting financial institutions as "CRAFTY FALCON" and updated its warning from October last year. The latest advisory indicates that cryptocurrency exchanges are among the affected entities, with attack activities continuing to escalate. CERT-In states that attackers exploit vulnerable applications and exposed testing environments, using shared credentials and access tokens to infiltrate production systems and deploy malicious files within cloud infrastructure. AI tools are utilized to rapidly generate and enhance attack scripts, with some attacks scheduled for weekends and holidays to delay detection. Attackers have previously verified unauthorized transfers through small test transactions and stolen cryptocurrency wallet keys, transferring funds from wallets. CERT-In has not disclosed the names of the affected exchanges or the amounts lost, and it recommends that relevant businesses enhance security monitoring around the clock, increasing staffing and lowering alert thresholds during weekends and holidays.
