Iran and Gulf States Talks Postponed, Saudi Arabia Cites Yemen Situation
On September 14, the Iranian Foreign Ministry announced that the high-level multilateral talks between Iran and Gulf states, originally scheduled to be held in Oman, have been postponed. The Omani Foreign Minister stated that the postponement was to seek consensus among all parties, while the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson pointed out that Saudi Arabia requested the delay due to the "Yemen situation." This meeting was intended to be the highest-level multilateral diplomatic contact between Iran and its Gulf neighbors since the outbreak of the U.S.-Iran war. Recently, Houthi forces have captured several major cities along the Red Sea coast of Yemen, potentially further controlling the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait. At the same time, militia groups with close ties to Iran in Iraq have launched drone attacks, leading to the closure of Saudi Arabia's east-west oil pipeline. The oil export routes of Gulf countries are under dual pressure, with the Strait of Hormuz effectively blocked and the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait facing new risks. Brent crude oil rose to $110 per barrel last Friday, and the average gasoline price in the U.S. reached $4.3 per gallon, significantly up from $2.98 at the outbreak of the war. Middle East experts believe that Gulf countries are accelerating their search for diplomatic solutions due to the expanding influence of Iran and its proxies, while also worrying about whether the U.S. has the capability to help contain the situation. Iran denies involvement in the attacks on Saudi oil pipelines and states that it has reached an agreement with Oman regarding shipping routes in the Strait of Hormuz, with both sides discussing the announcement of related arrangements.
