Microsoft Exits Nscale Data Center Partnership, IPO Plans Face New Challenges
Microsoft has withdrawn from its data center partnership with Nscale in Laindon, Essex, which brings uncertainty to Nscale's IPO plans. Microsoft did not specify the reason for terminating the partnership, and the project has faced multiple delays, with power expected to be supplied to the facility only in the 2030s. Nscale's flagship project in Norway is also behind schedule, with a planned capacity of 30 megawatts, but only 6.4 megawatts are currently operational. The IPO documents submitted by Nscale indicate that about 85% of the company's contracts rely on Microsoft and Anthropic. Microsoft was originally set to be the primary tenant of Nscale's first data center in Essex, and its exit will be a blow to Nscale. The company is seeking to raise up to $3 billion through the IPO, which could go public as soon as this month.
