The cryptocurrency ATM ban in Minnesota officially took effect on August 1, 2026, resulting in the shutdown of 201 virtual currency vending machines across the state. The bill SF3868, signed by Governor Tim Walz, prohibits all cryptocurrency ATM operators from installing, operating, maintaining, or providing virtual currency kiosks. Existing machines must be deactivated by August 1, and operators have until December 31 to remove them. According to the Minnesota Department of Commerce, residents lost approximately $1 million to cryptocurrency ATM scams between 2023 and 2025, with senior citizens being the primary victims. A report from the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center in 2025 indicated that losses related to cryptocurrency and crypto wallets in Minnesota exceeded $151 million, with scams typically involving fabricated emergencies that pressured victims to send money quickly. Minnesota's ban is not an isolated incident; Tennessee implemented a comprehensive ban on July 1, while Georgia enacted transaction limit regulations for cryptocurrency ATMs on the same day. Delaware and New Jersey are also pushing similar legislation.
