Patagonia, Argentina Attracts Tech Giants to Build Data Centers
Argentina's Patagonia region is attracting tech companies and infrastructure developers, such as OpenAI, to build large-scale data centers due to its cool climate, abundant renewable energy, and shale gas resources. Pampa Energia plans to construct a data center next to the Loma de la Lata power station in Neuquen province, targeting a maximum power scale of 500 megawatts, with an initial pilot project of 20 to 40 megawatts. The related power infrastructure costs are estimated at around $900 million. OpenAI, in partnership with Sur Energy, is investing up to $25 billion in Argentina to build a clean energy data center with a capacity of up to 500 megawatts. Poland's Green Capital is advancing the first phase of a 300-megawatt data center and supporting wind and solar projects in Chubut province, with a total planned capacity of up to 3,000 megawatts. The overall project is still in its early stages and faces challenges related to power infrastructure and fiber optic connectivity.
