The prediction market platform Polymarket is under investigation by U.S. authorities due to repeated compliance failures and allegations of fraud. In February 2023, a $10 million fraud attempt occurred, and CEO Shane Copland reportedly instructed to "prioritize growth and pay fines if regulators find issues." Fraudsters attempted to withdraw at least $10 million by linking thousands of Polymarket accounts using stolen debit cards, and payment processor Checkout.com stated that over 80% of the transactions were suspected of being fraudulent. Polymarket has previously been fined $1.4 million for regulatory violations, and recently, it has faced controversy for deceptive marketing practices by having social media influencers create fake betting win videos. The CFTC is currently investigating Polymarket, and New York has filed a lawsuit claiming that Polymarket is evading state gambling regulations. Polymarket has announced measures to protect users but is under scrutiny from regulators due to insider trading allegations.
