Ripple Proposes Privacy to Increase XRPL Usage in Banks
Ripple believes that financial privacy is essential to expand the use of XRP Ledger (XRPL) among banks and regulated institutions. During XRP Seoul 2026, Ayo Akinyele, Senior Engineering Director at Ripple, highlighted confidentiality, trust, scalability, and institutional infrastructure as key factors for network adoption. The proposal includes selective confidentiality mechanisms that protect financial data without eliminating the characteristics of a public network. XRPL's 'Confidential Transfers' are an example, utilizing EC-ElGamal encryption and zero-knowledge proofs to hide balances and transfer values. Validators can verify transactions without knowing the amounts involved. Additionally, auditing mechanisms are contemplated, allowing authorized auditors to decrypt financial information to comply with regulations. Ripple also proposes credentials, permissioned domains, and restricted liquidity pools to control user participation in specific activities. Among the potential uses is confidential collateral, where an entity can demonstrate collateral without revealing sensitive details. Confidential Transfers are part of the proposed amendments for XRPL 3.3.0 and must be approved by validators. Ripple aims for privacy to be an infrastructure that attracts greater institutional participation to XRPL, facing the challenge of protecting financial information without sacrificing verification and auditing.
