Top AI Researchers Call for Regulation of Self-Improving AI

Leaders of research at OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta Platforms, and Microsoft have urged policymakers to review the progress of their respective companies in automating artificial intelligence research, responding to industry-wide calls for stronger regulation of AI technologies. In a paper released on Monday, OpenAI's Chief Scientist Jakub Pachocki, Anthropic co-founder Jack Clark, Microsoft Chief Scientific Officer Eric Horvitz, and Meta's Vice President of AI Research Dawn Song pointed out that the automation of AI research could trigger an "intelligence explosion," causing the pace of technological advancement to exceed human comprehension. The authors of the paper called on policymakers to urgently enhance transparency to understand the extent of progress each company has made in automating model development.
