Turkey to Sign Agreement with Russia to Increase Fertilizer Imports

By: delo.ua|2026/09/08 11:05:10

Turkey plans to sign a memorandum of understanding with Russia to increase the import of nitrogen fertilizers, which is expected to resolve issues related to the procurement of urea from producers in the Persian Gulf. The document will be signed by Turkey's Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Ahmet Bagci, and his Russian counterpart, Maxim Borov. The agreement will exempt Turkey from Russian export restrictions on nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers, as well as ammonia, allowing farmers to secure the necessary volumes of raw materials ahead of the planting season. Turkey consumes about 7 million tons of fertilizers annually, producing only 5 million tons, despite having the capacity to produce over 8 million tons. Previously, Russia set quotas for fertilizer exports at 20 million tons until November 30 to protect the domestic market and temporarily halted the export of ammonium nitrate. Global restrictions and logistical issues caused by the war against Ukraine have also affected fertilizer supplies to Turkey.
