Two Arrested in Malaysia for Bitcoin Mining with Illegal Connections
The police of the Perak Tengah district in Malaysia arrested two men for Bitcoin mining using clandestine electrical connections. Authorities detected a suspicious location where illegal connections were made to siphon energy from the public grid. During the operation, 30 Bitcoin mining machines, an internet router, a desktop switch, a roll of electrical cable, and two vehicles were seized. The operation was carried out by the Criminal Investigation Division in collaboration with engineers from Tenaga Nasional Berhad. The police consider these activities serious as they violate the law and cause losses to electricity companies, in addition to increasing the risk of fires. The case is proceeding under Section 427 of the Penal Code and Section 37(1) of the Electricity Supply Act. This procedure occurs in a context of stagnation in the regulation of Bitcoin mining in Malaysia, where the Prime Minister expressed in January 2025 the intention to regulate digital currency. However, reforms for mining remain stalled.
