Vance Claims US Data Center Protests Due to Power Shortages, Calls for Cheap Electricity That Doesn't Need Metering
US Vice President JD Vance stated at the All-In Summit that AI data centers in the United States are facing increasing opposition, primarily due to insufficient power supply. Residents see the continuous construction of data centers while electricity costs are rising, leading to backlash. He believes the solution is not to reduce the construction of data centers but to enhance power generation capacity. Vance pointed out that the US has failed to build enough power facilities over the past generation and should aim for the goal of "electricity so cheap that it doesn't need to be metered" in the future. He also mentioned that China's rapid growth in power generation has impacted the development of new industries in the US, such as AI. The IEA estimates that data centers will account for about half of the new electricity demand in the US by 2025. This week, the US Congress is advancing legislation to prevent the costs of expanding data centers from being passed on to ordinary households.
