Visa Secures Card Payment Funds with Stablecoins
Visa is expanding its on-chain financial structure to secure settlement funds needed for card payments using stablecoins, in line with the growth of the stablecoin-linked card market. As of the second quarter of the fiscal year 2026, there are over 160 stablecoin-linked card programs worldwide, with payment volumes increasing by approximately 200% compared to the previous year. Visa's settlement volume for stablecoins has recently surpassed $20 billion on an annualized basis, marking an increase of more than 15 times compared to the previous year. Card issuers need to secure funds for daily settlements on the Visa network, and early stablecoin card companies are facing challenges in funding. To address this, Visa has established a funding structure for settlement funds based on stablecoins through the on-chain credit market, Credit Coop. Card issuers can borrow stablecoins through Credit Coop's credit limits and repay them when card payment funds are received. The loan and repayment processes are recorded on the blockchain and automated through smart contracts. Credit Coop has supplied over $2.5 billion in funds since 2023, with cumulative settlement funds related to Rain reaching $2 billion. Visa and Credit Coop plan to implement a 'just-in-time settlement fund' method that allows card issuers to automatically borrow stablecoins as needed.
