Polymarket comes up constantly in crypto conversation, usually as a screenshot of a percentage — "the market says 68%." That number is the output of a specific mechanism, and once you understand it the percentage stops looking like an opinion and starts looking like what it is: a price. This guide covers what Polymarket is, how its markets work, and what its own documentation says about who can use it.

Polymarket is an independent third party with no affiliation to WEEX, and nothing here is a recommendation to use it.

    What Polymarket is

Polymarket's own documentation defines it simply: "a prediction market platform where users trade on the outcomes of real-world events." It describes itself as the world's largest prediction market.

The important word is trade. There is no house taking the other side of your position. Per the docs, "you trade shares with other users in an open, peer-to-peer market. Prices reflect the market's collective belief in the probability of an event occurring." Markets cover elections, macroeconomic releases, sport, crypto and geopolitics. It runs on Polygon mainnet (chain ID 137), and its core trading contract was audited by Quantstamp and Cantina in March 2026.

    How the markets work

Every market has exactly two outcome tokens: Yes and No. At resolution, a Yes share redeems for $1.00 if the event happened, and a No share redeems for $1.00 if it did not. The losing side is worth nothing.

That $1.00 ceiling is what makes the pricing legible. Shares trade between $0 and $1, and the price is the implied probability: "the price represents the market's belief in the probability of that outcome occurring." A Yes share at $0.65 means the market is pricing roughly a 65% chance. The percentage you see quoted is simply that price, expressed differently.

Underneath, shares are tokens issued through the Gnosis Conditional Token Framework (ERC-1155). Collateral splits and merges cleanly: $1 creates one Yes share and one No share, and the reverse works too. Every Yes/No pair is backed by exactly $1 locked in the contract, which is why the two sides of any market always price to $1 between them.

One detail most explainers get wrong. Polymarket is very often described as a USDC platform. That has not been accurate since 28 April 2026, when a major upgrade replaced USDC.e with pUSD (Polymarket USD) as the collateral token for all trading. pUSD is a standard ERC-20 on Polygon, and per the docs it is "backed by USDC, with backing enforced onchain by the smart contract" — "no algorithmic peg, no fractional reserve." If a guide tells you that you trade with USDC directly, it is describing the platform as it was before that date.

On fees, the shape matters more than the numbers, because the numbers move — the sports rate changed in July 2026 alone. Only takers pay, some categories carry no fee, and the rate is calculated so a trade at 30¢ costs the same as one at 70¢. Check the official fee page for current values.

    How a market resolves

This is where prediction markets differ most from an ordinary exchange.

Polymarket settles through the UMA Optimistic Oracle — a decentralised, permissionless process. Anyone can propose the outcome by posting a bond (typically $750), and anyone can dispute it with a matching counter-bond within a two-hour challenge window. If a dispute escalates, both sides submit evidence over 24–48 hours in UMA's Discord, and UMA token holders then vote over roughly another 48 hours.

Undisputed markets settle about two hours after a proposal; disputed ones can take four to six days. Winning tokens redeem one-for-one: 100 tokens return $100.

That is the real risk, and it is worth stating plainly: the outcome is decided by a bonded proposal-and-vote process, not an automatic feed. Ambiguously worded markets are where that process gets tested.

    The current landscape

Polymarket publishes its geographic restrictions openly, and they are enumerated country by country rather than by region — as of August 2026:

    • A small set of OFAC-sanctioned jurisdictions is blocked outright — positions can neither be opened nor closed.
    • A longer list of 36 jurisdictions is "close-only": existing positions may be closed, no new orders accepted. It includes France, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Poland, Slovakia, the United Kingdom and the United States.
    • A third group — Ireland, Japan, Malta (sports only) and the Netherlands — is close-only on the website while API access remains open.

Two observations follow, and both need care. First, the United States is currently on the close-only list in Polymarket's own developer documentation. Second, Spain does not appear on any of these lists at the date above, and the EU and EEA are not treated as blocs.

Neither is a legal conclusion, and neither is ours to draw. Polymarket's documentation states plainly that "this list can change," and the platform checks eligibility by IP at order time. To know where you stand, read Polymarket's official terms and restriction pages directly — the only authoritative source for your situation.

    Risks worth taking seriously

Resolution risk. The oracle is a human process with bonds and votes attached. A market whose wording leaves room for interpretation can resolve in a way a reasonable person disputes, and the dispute path takes days.

Liquidity risk. A percentage quoted on a market with little depth is a far weaker signal than the same number on a heavily traded one, and exiting early can cost more than the headline suggests.

Irreversibility. These are on-chain positions in a self-custodied wallet. No chargeback, and no support desk that can undo a signature, a wrong address, or a position taken by mistake.

Eligibility risk. Restrictions are enforced at order time and can change without notice.

A price is not a forecast. An implied probability is what a set of traders were willing to pay at a moment in time. It is not a prediction of what will happen, and it is not a basis for a financial decision.

If macroeconomic events are what draw you to these markets, our explainer on how euro-area macro moves bitcoin covers the drivers those markets are pricing.

    FAQ

What is Polymarket, in one sentence? A peer-to-peer prediction market platform, running on Polygon, where users trade Yes/No shares on the outcomes of real-world events and each winning share redeems for $1.

How does Polymarket work? You buy shares in an outcome at a price between $0 and $1 that represents its implied probability. If the event resolves your way, each share pays $1; if not, it pays nothing. Settlement is handled by the UMA Optimistic Oracle.

Is Polymarket the same as betting? Mechanically it is an exchange: you trade shares with other users at prices set by the order book, you can exit before resolution, and there is no house on the other side. How it is classified legally differs by jurisdiction — which is exactly why Polymarket publishes country-by-country restrictions and why you should read its official terms.

Which countries can use Polymarket? Polymarket publishes the current lists in its own documentation and checks eligibility by IP when an order is placed. The lists change, so the official pages are the only reliable answer — no third-party summary, including this one, should be treated as current.
