Anthropic Loses Lawsuit Against U.S. Department of Defense
Artificial intelligence company Anthropic has lost its appeal against the U.S. Department of Defense's designation of supply chain risks. The court ruled that the Department of Defense could exclude Anthropic's AI model, Claude, from its systems. Anthropic is preparing for an initial public offering (IPO) in November, and government-related contracts are attracting investor interest. On the 25th, the U.S. Court of Appeals dismissed Anthropic's claims by a vote of 2 to 1, upholding the Department of Defense's supply chain risk designation. Consequently, the Department of Defense can restrict the use of Anthropic's products. Anthropic signed a contract with the Department of Defense worth up to $200 million last July, but this is only a contractual limit and not the actual amount paid. The conflict between the two parties arose over the scope of Claude's use, with the Department of Defense demanding all legal uses of Claude, while Anthropic refused to impose restrictions. This ruling does not imply a total ban on the use of Anthropic by the U.S. government, as a California court blocked government regulations against Anthropic on the 27th of last month. Anthropic is preparing for its IPO with an estimated company value of around $20 billion, potentially raising up to $100 billion. However, the IPO offering price has not yet been determined, and the impact of this ruling on the company's value remains uncertain.
