Benchmark Partner Questions Anthropic's Motivation to Limit Model Distillation

Benchmark partner Chetan Puttagunta questioned Anthropic's regulatory calls regarding AI model distillation in a post on the X platform. He pointed out that Anthropic, a company valued at around $1 trillion with abundant technical and financial resources, should theoretically be able to easily identify and track so-called 'large-scale distillation attacks.' Puttagunta believes that the real cost of Anthropic's decision to limit related activities is not due to a lack of technical capability, but rather the sacrifice of some API revenue. He stated, 'The only cost that seems to need to be paid is a reduction in related API business income.' Previously, AI companies like Anthropic have been continuously focused on the issue of model distillation, which involves using the outputs of large models to train another model, thereby reducing costs and improving efficiency. Some AI companies are concerned that competitors could bypass R&D investments by obtaining model outputs through API calls. Puttagunta argues that the controversy surrounding model distillation in the AI industry essentially involves balancing commercial interests, open competition, and intellectual property protection. Finding a balance between protecting core technologies and maintaining an open ecosystem will become an important topic in future industry competition.
