Blockstream Proposes Quantum-Resistant Bitcoin Upgrade SHRINCS

By: cointelegraph.com|2026/08/27 02:36:00

Blockstream has submitted a Bitcoin Improvement Proposal (BIP) to release an upgrade suggestion for the quantum signature scheme SHRINCS. SHRINCS has completed production environment testing on Blockstream's Liquid sidechain, with a minimum signature size of 548 bytes, approximately nine times larger than the existing Bitcoin Schnorr signature (64 bytes), but smaller than NIST-approved schemes like SPHINCS+. Research shows that using SHRINCS, Bitcoin's throughput can be maintained at around 3 TPS, close to current levels; whereas using NIST-approved schemes could drop to 0.36-0.5 TPS. The BIP notes that SHRINCS has not yet completed security proofs and is still in the early stages, introducing complexities such as state management and key incompatibility. Blockstream is also researching the combination of zero-knowledge proofs with aggregated signatures, expecting to increase the speed to 6.7 TPS.
