Chinese Ministry of State Security Calls Cryptocurrencies a National Security Threat

The Chinese Ministry of State Security has warned that cryptocurrencies are being used in financial crimes, cyberattacks, and espionage schemes. The agency considers the notion of anonymity in crypto transactions to be erroneous. In a social media post, the Ministry stated that virtual currencies facilitate money laundering and support intelligence activities. Foreign intelligence agencies allegedly convince potential recruits that operations with crypto assets are difficult to trace. The Ministry characterized the idea of anonymity as a false thesis, reminding that blockchain stores the history of transactions and that concealing one's identity when converting cryptocurrencies to fiat becomes increasingly challenging. Chinese authorities link the crypto market to risks for the financial system and assert that virtual currencies are used by foreign anti-China forces. In 2021, activities related to cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin mining, were banned in China. Some economists doubt the permanence of the strict stance; however, control in mainland China remains tight. In 2022, Beijing allowed Hong Kong to attract crypto businesses. Lawyer Andrew Fay noted that the Ministry's statement serves as a reminder of the ban on trading virtual currencies in mainland China and the serious risks in this sector.
