On August 12, Coherent, a U.S. photonics device manufacturer, announced its FY2026 Q4 and full-year results for the period ending June 30. According to the company's earnings announcement, the quarterly revenue was $2.046 billion, an increase of 33.8% year-over-year. This latest quarterly report is marked as unaudited.
The company's management contextualized demand within the evolution from copper to optical connections in AI data centers, manufacturing capacity expansion, and the ramp-up of new growth platforms. However, translating this financial report directly to "AI optical interconnects sold more" narrows the interpretation of the report. The current segment breakdown for the company is "Data Center and Communication" and "Industrial," and the public disclosure does not itemize quarterly revenues for AI data centers, traditional communications, and other sub-products.
What is truly worth dissecting are the four tables within the same disclosure. The revenue curve for FY2026 shows a continuous upward trend, with year-over-year changes in segment revenue highly concentrated, and the non-GAAP operating profit margin outpacing the gross margin. Significant changes in fixed asset additions, inventory, and cash flow also occurred within the same fiscal year.
The focus of the first chart is not solely on the highest single bar. According to Coherent's quarterly earnings announcements, revenue for each quarter of this fiscal year has increased sequentially, reaching $2.046 billion in the last quarter, with a sequential growth rate of 13.3%. The continuous upward trend in the chart conveys more than just "crossing $2 billion"; the latest quarter is part of a sustained growth period.
According to the company's FY2026 Q4 earnings announcement, the statutory year-over-year growth rate for the latest quarter is 33.8%. The company also disclosed a pro forma year-over-year growth rate excluding sold businesses; these serve different metrics and should not be conflated into a single growth rate.
The company provided a revenue guidance for FY2027 Q1 of $2.2 billion to $2.4 billion. According to the announcement, this is a forward-looking judgment for the next quarter and should be presented separately from the already realized quarterly revenue, and should not be viewed as orders or confirmed revenue.
The second chart breaks down the year-over-year revenue changes into two opposing forces. According to the company's FY2026 Q4 segment revenue table, the Data Center and Communication segment increased by $597 million compared to the same period last year.
The Industrial segment, on the other hand, decreased by $81 million, resulting in a net increase of $516 million in total company revenue. This means that the increase in the Data Center and Communication segment exceeded the net increase for the entire company, while the decline in the Industrial segment offset part of the growth.
According to the same segment revenue table, the Q4 revenue for the Data Center and Communication segment was $1.615 billion, accounting for approximately 79% of the company's quarterly revenue. This ratio indicates that the revenue focus leans towards this segment, but does not imply that 79% of it comes from AI optical interconnects. The financial report did not provide a breakdown of products, customers, or orders, so one cannot deduce the precise contribution of a specific product category from the segment name.
The value of this chart lies in its delineation of two lines. The company disclosed which segment primarily contributed to the confirmed growth, but the report did not answer which products and customers constitute that segment. The two should not be conflated.
Increased revenue does not automatically mean improved profitability efficiency. According to the company's earnings announcement, Coherent's non-GAAP gross margin rose from 38.1% in FY2025 Q4 to 40.2% in FY2026 Q4. The space left after deducting direct costs from each dollar of revenue has thickened.
The non-GAAP operating profit margin increased from 18.0% to 21.8% during the same period. According to the company's earnings announcement, the year-over-year growth rate of the operating profit margin in Q4 was greater than that of the gross margin, with specific increments noted in the chart.
During the same period, the non-GAAP selling, general, and administrative expense ratio decreased, while the R&D expense ratio saw a slight increase. According to the company's earnings announcement, these changes in expense ratios coincided with the period of profit margin improvement but were not sufficient to independently prove that any single cost action led to the entire improvement.
Attention should also be paid to the metrics used in the charts. Non-GAAP indicators exclude stock-based compensation, amortization of acquisition-related intangible assets, restructuring, and other items. According to the company’s announcement, this is a supplementary metric for management to observe ongoing operational performance and should not replace GAAP reports.
Translating this set of changes into everyday language, Coherent not only sold more products during the same period. The movements in revenue, gross margin, and some expense ratios are reflected in the operating profit margin, but the public report did not attribute this change to a single business or cost item.
The final chart shifts the focus from the income statement to the cash flow statement. According to the company's FY2026 cash flow statement, fixed asset additions, or Additions to PP&E in the table, amounted to $1.103 billion, approximately 2.5 times that of the previous fiscal year. Management stated that capital allocation is prioritized for expanding manufacturing capacity, but this investment cannot be directly equated to expansion expenditures for any specific product line or customer.
In the same fiscal year, cash flow from operating activities decreased from $634 million to $80 million. According to the company's balance sheet, ending inventory also rose from $1.438 billion to $2.581 billion.
These three changes occurred within the same fiscal year, and the public disclosure did not provide a single causal breakdown among them.
According to the company's cash flow statement, FY2026's net cash flow from financing activities was $1.477 billion, which includes multiple cash flows such as issuing shares, borrowing, and repaying debts. This is a funding arrangement different from the income statement and cannot be explained solely by the growth in quarterly revenue.
The key takeaway from this financial report is not to directly translate "Data Center and Communication" into AI revenue. Changes in revenue focus, profit margins, and fixed asset additions and inventory changes in the cash flow statement all occurred simultaneously in the FY2026 report.
