Coinbase Recommends Early Preparation for Bitcoin Post-Quantum Migration
Coinbase shares its views on Bitcoin's post-quantum migration, suggesting that changes to Bitcoin's consensus and ecosystem migration may take years and should begin as early as possible before quantum computers become a threat. The new post-quantum output types should ideally be introduced, replaced, or supplemented in a way that does not require a complete redesign of the system. The P2MR and P2TRv2 proposed in BIP-360 offer this flexibility. During the transition phase, Coinbase recommends considering a "1-of-2" hybrid scheme, where the same funds can be spent using either traditional ECDSA/Schnorr keys or post-quantum keys. Coinbase also states that stateful signature schemes are difficult to manage, prone to errors, and can even lead to signature forgery; if such schemes are introduced, a stateless option should also be provided. The signature schemes should also accommodate the needs of MPC custody. For funds that are dormant, lost, or have exposed public keys, Coinbase believes these should be discussed as a separate issue and should not slow down the technological progress of post-quantum signature support. This document is intended for community discussion and does not represent a final position.
