Court Proceedings to Protect 170-Year-Old Cherkasy Sugar Factory

The Cherkasy sugar factory, built in 1854, may receive official heritage protection status. The Prosecutor's Office of the Cherkasy region has initiated legal proceedings to protect this cultural heritage site. Prosecutors filed a lawsuit against the heritage protection authority, which has ignored the need to formalize a protection agreement and include the factory in the State Register for over 15 years. During an inspection, it was revealed that in November 2010, the factory was included in the list of identified cultural heritage sites; however, no protective measures have been taken. Due to the inaction of officials, the protection agreement has not been concluded, and the building has not been entered into the State Register of Immovable Monuments of Ukraine. The legal proceedings were initiated after an electronic petition to grant the factory monument status, posted on February 28, 2026, failed to gather the required number of votes. The prosecutor demands that the inaction of the heritage protection authority be recognized as unlawful and that it be compelled to formalize the necessary documents. The Cherkasy District Administrative Court has already opened proceedings in the case.
