Enactment of the Joaquín Law in Buenos Aires

The Government of the province of Buenos Aires has published Law 15.618, known as the "Joaquín Law," which establishes mandatory safety measures for the installation and maintenance of sports arches and recreational games in public and private establishments. The law was enacted on July 16, following the death of Joaquín Stefano Gatto, a 12-year-old boy who died from the impact of an unsecured soccer arch. The regulation requires securing systems for arches weighing more than 20 kilograms and counterweights for basketball hoops, among other measures. Inspections will be carried out by licensed professionals who will issue the corresponding permits. Institutions have one year to adapt their facilities, with the possibility of an extension. Municipalities will be responsible for verifying compliance with the law and promoting awareness campaigns. The provincial Executive Power has 30 days to regulate the law.
