Fidji Simo is leaving OpenAI, where she joined in May 2025 as the General Manager of Applications. She took a medical leave last April due to a worsening of her postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), which was diagnosed in 2019. In a message on X, she stated that her recovery will be longer and more complex than expected, and that she is focusing on her health. Simo thanked Sam Altman, Greg Brockman, and the board of directors for their support. Her responsibilities, including managing ChatGPT and launching advertising in the app, will be divided among Greg Brockman, Sarah Friar, and Jason Kwon. Sam Altman expressed his sadness on X, praising her contributions and wishing her a speedy recovery. This departure comes as OpenAI has recently filed for an IPO and is looking to cut expenses while facing competition, particularly from Anthropic.
