Goldman Sachs Reports Record High Stock Holdings Among U.S. Households and Institutions

Goldman Sachs data shows that stock allocations among U.S. households, pension funds, insurance companies, and investment funds have approached 65%, reaching a record high. This marks an increase of approximately 31 percentage points from the low point following the 2008 financial crisis, surpassing the peak during the dot-com bubble. Similar investors in G10 countries have also seen their stock allocations rise to about 57%, which is approximately 12 percentage points higher than previous cycle peaks. This indicates a significant deepening reliance of global residents and institutions on the stock market for wealth. High allocations can enhance the wealth effect during bullish phases, but they also mean that household consumption and institutional balance sheets are more sensitive to market pullbacks, potentially narrowing the space for incremental buying. The record high in allocations itself is not a signal of a market top; it still requires consideration of valuations, earnings, and capital flows for judgment.
