Iran and Oman Approach Agreement on Hormuz Strait Navigation Routes

Iran and Oman have approached an agreement on organizing navigation routes in the Hormuz Strait. The two countries are coordinating safe navigation routes, but the final agreement document and detailed operational rules have not been made public. The Hormuz Strait is a major transport route for Middle Eastern crude oil and liquefied natural gas, and disruptions in navigation could impact logistics and maritime insurance costs. According to the International Maritime Organization (IMO), as of August 11, there have been 65 incidents in the Hormuz Strait and surrounding Middle Eastern waters, resulting in the deaths of 17 crew members. Iran's Foreign Minister has stated that a mechanism for managing navigation in the strait is being established. Oman has proposed joint management to Iran, and a fee structure based on user self-burden was also discussed, although specific details have not been disclosed. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) and several other countries have condemned attacks on Iranian commercial vessels and emphasized efforts for safe navigation. This proposed route is an attempt to restore order in navigation, but it remains uncertain whether it will lead to normalization in the strait.
