Latvia to Impose 300% Tariff on Grain from Russia and Belarus
The Latvian government plans to introduce a 300% tariff on grain from Russia and Belarus. Latvian Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs announced this after negotiations with the Prime Minister of Estonia and plans for similar talks with the head of the Lithuanian government. Officials from Latvia and Lithuania are considering the possibility of halting the transportation of Russian grain through their ports in response to increased transit shipments from Moscow following Ukraine's attacks on its Baltic ports. Russian exporters are using Latvia, an EU and NATO member, to transport grain to other markets. A ban or high tariffs could deprive the countries of a key alternative amid paralyzed routes through the Black and Azov Seas due to Ukrainian drone strikes. In the previous export season, from July 2025 to June 2026, Russia exported 46.3 million metric tons of grain through the ports of the Azov and Black Seas, accounting for 90% of the total volume of Russian maritime grain exports.
