NFL Requests Strengthened Regulation of Sports Prediction Markets from CFTC

The National Football League (NFL) has requested the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) to strengthen regulations on sports prediction markets. The NFL argues that prediction contracts based on game outcomes are similar to sports betting and emphasizes the need for safeguards to protect consumers and maintain the integrity of the games. In a comment letter submitted to the CFTC, the NFL stated that while the draft regulations for event contracts are positive, there are essential areas that require improvement. The NFL highlighted that preserving the integrity of the games is a top priority and pointed out that it is difficult to distinguish prediction markets from existing sports gambling. Additionally, it demanded that contracts that could manipulate outcomes should not be allowed. The NFL also criticized the CFTC's 10-day pre-approval process as excessively short, expressing concerns that inappropriate contracts could be listed in the market. The NFL called for clear regulations to prevent insider trading and consumer protection measures, such as an age limit of 21 and older. This stance contrasts with the CFTC's shift towards relaxing regulations on prediction markets.
