The U.S. Department of Defense announced a $1.4 billion loan to Sila, an American startup that manufactures silicon and carbon-based anode materials for lithium-ion batteries. The goal is clear: to accelerate a domestic supply chain for battery components and reduce dependence on China, which currently dominates the global graphite market, the most commonly used material in conventional anodes.
This move is not isolated. Along with the loan to Sila, the Pentagon also closed deals with three other critical materials companies, totaling over $2 billion in investments aimed at reducing strategic bottlenecks. It is the kind of industrial bet that signals a structural shift in how the U.S. thinks about its defense and energy infrastructure.
Most lithium-ion battery anodes produced worldwide use graphite. The supply chain for this material is largely controlled by Chinese companies. For American buyers, from automakers to military equipment manufacturers, this creates a vulnerability that has become impossible to ignore amid geopolitical tensions and escalating trade tariffs.
Sila manufactures its silicon-carbon material in Moses Lake, Washington. This makes it one of the few sources of anode material in the U.S. that is not subject to tariffs or supply disruption risks related to disputes between powers. The factory began operations in September and, at its current size, produces about 2 gigawatt-hours of anode material per year.
The plan with the new loan is to quintuple the plant's capacity, enough to supply the production of over 100,000 electric vehicles. For an industry facing constant scaling challenges, this capacity jump is significant.
Several companies, including Group14 and Amprius, are investing in silicon anodes as an alternative to graphite. The promise is to store 20% to 40% more electricity than traditional anodes. In other words: batteries with higher energy density, which can last longer or be smaller and lighter.
For defense applications, these attributes are especially relevant. Drones that fly farther, portable equipment that lasts longer in the field, and electric armored vehicles that do not need huge batteries to operate. The same goes for the civilian market: electric vehicles with greater range and shorter charging times are the industry's big goal.
Sila already has agreements in place with Mercedes and Panasonic. The Pentagon's loan could open doors for direct contracts with defense companies, which have been receiving billion-dollar contracts as conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine drag on.
The loan to Sila is part of a broader package of investments from the Department of Defense in strategic materials. Alongside the agreement with the startup, three other deals were announced.
The Australian company Sunrise Energy Metals will receive $400 million to mine scandium, a rare earth element used in lightweight alloys. Minnesota's Niron Magnetics received $150 million to manufacture rare-earth-free magnets, applicable to smartphones, missiles, and electric motors. And the government made an $85 million equity investment in Strategic Bauxite, a bauxite mining company, a mineral that contains aluminum.
In total, over $2 billion is directed to reduce American dependence on supply chains concentrated in a few countries. The strategy reflects a trend that has gained momentum in recent years: the competition between the U.S. and China for technological and industrial dominance is shaping investment decisions by governments and private companies.
Sila has already raised over $1.5 billion from private investors, according to PitchBook data. In July, it raised $300 million in a round led by Atreides Management and Sutter Hill Ventures to finance the factory's expansion. With the Pentagon's loan, the company now has access to cheap capital to scale its operation without diluting equity.
For those following the sector, the signal is that the U.S. government is willing to underwrite the industrial risk of creating a domestic battery supply chain. This has direct implications for electric vehicle companies, component manufacturers, and ultimately for the geopolitics of the energy transition.
It is not just about better batteries. It is about who controls the inputs that will define the next generation of military and civilian technology. In a scenario where trade tariffs can change overnight and geopolitical conflicts reshape supply routes, having domestic production of critical materials has ceased to be a competitive advantage and has become a matter of national security.
The Pentagon's bet on Sila is, above all, an admission: the United States cannot rely on a single country for the components that power everything from electric cars to defense systems. The size of the check, $1.4 billion, shows the degree of urgency.
