Perpetual swaps have established themselves as the center of price formation in the cryptocurrency market, handling up to $50 trillion in annual trading volume. This derivative product serves as a key tool for leveraging bets on major assets like Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH), with no expiration date, making it widely utilized by both individual investors and professional traders. Traditional futures contracts caused issues with price discrepancies and forced position liquidations due to their expiration dates, but perpetual swaps eliminate this structure.
