White House Plans to Expand AI Regulation, Open Source Models to be Included in Testing Framework
The White House plans to revise its artificial intelligence guidelines to expand regulation of AI models. According to the new framework, cutting-edge AI models developed by U.S. laboratories must undergo safety testing by the federal government before being publicly released. Currently, this framework only applies to closed-source models from companies like Anthropic and OpenAI. White House officials have indicated that the framework is expected to encompass open-source models in the coming months. Once open-source models achieve cutting-edge capabilities comparable to Anthropic's Mythos-level models and OpenAI's GPT-5.6, they will be included in the testing framework and subjected to pre-release safety testing.
