US Private Credit Stress Reaches 2017 High, Implications for Bitcoin
The US private credit market, valued at over 2 trillion dollars, is showing stress signals not seen since 2017, raising concerns about the potential impact on Bitcoin. Non-accrual loans, which indicate borrowers have stopped payments or are likely to default, reached a median of 2.8% of cost among the twenty largest US Business Development Companies in Q2, up from nearly 2% in March. This is the highest level in almost a decade, reminiscent of stress from the 2017 oil price collapse. Redemption pressures are also evident, with some funds facing withdrawal requests of up to 40% of net asset value, while most limit quarterly redemptions to 5%. Payment-in-kind arrangements are increasing, allowing borrowers to pay interest with more debt, indicating repayment strain. Default rates are rising, particularly in software and healthcare sectors. Elevated US interest rates and a resilient economy provide context, although regulators have not indicated imminent systemic risk. The stress in private credit does not directly impact Bitcoin but affects market risk and liquidity. If defaults increase and investor sentiment worsens, liquid assets like Bitcoin may be sold off quickly due to its 24/7 trading nature. Conversely, if the situation escalates to slow the US economy, it could lead to Federal Reserve rate cuts, potentially benefiting Bitcoin. Thus, worsening private credit stress could initially pressure Bitcoin, but may later serve as a catalyst for its growth.
