U.S. Treasury Bonds Rise as Market Expects Limited Government Spending

On November 4, U.S. Treasury bonds rose. With the Democratic Party likely to control Congress, investors anticipate a political stalemate in Washington that could limit government spending. Regulation of artificial intelligence may slow economic growth and reduce the necessity for the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates. Analysts noted that the market breathed a sigh of relief as President Trump’s promise to distribute $5,000 to every adult American may not be fulfilled. The decline in the stock market has prompted investors to turn to safe-haven assets like Treasury bonds, providing support for the bond market. Trump promised that if the Republican Party successfully retains control of Congress, $5,000 would be distributed to every adult citizen, involving about $1.2 trillion, which is equivalent to 16% of the federal budget. Andrew Lilley, chief interest rate strategist at Barrenjoey, stated that although the market previously estimated the probability of this scenario at only 5%, that risk has now disappeared. If implemented, the Treasury bond market would react catastrophically.
