Vitalik Buterin calls for new cryptographic technologies for blockchains
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin stated at a blockchain summit in Shanghai that blockchains require new cryptographic technologies. He emphasized that blockchain is evolving from a simple standalone ledger to a more complex cryptographic network that includes Layer 1, Layer 2, the mempool, off-chain computation, and collaborative block production among multiple participants. Buterin noted that advancements in data analytics and artificial intelligence are highlighting the limitations of early public blockchains' privacy models. In this context, technologies such as SNARKs, STARKs, fully homomorphic encryption (FHE), and formal verification are becoming essential for enhancing privacy, scalability, and security. He also mentioned that zero-knowledge technology is progressing beyond the long-term roadmap phase and is being incorporated into concrete Ethereum Improvement Proposals, while AI is facilitating the development and verification of intricate cryptographic systems.
