WonderFi Founder Criticizes Canada's Innovation Environment: Businesses Struggle to Grow, Forced to Sell to Robinhood
Odaily Planet Daily reports that Karia Samaroo, founder and former CEO of the Canadian cryptocurrency company WonderFi, recently stated that the company's acquisition by a U.S. trading platform for CAD 250 million was not due to a lack of growth potential, but rather because the Canadian market environment has limited local tech companies from scaling up.
Samaroo noted that WonderFi was established in 2021 and, after several years of development, the company integrated Canada's fragmented cryptocurrency market, built a national brand, and survived the QuadrigaCX scandal, the FTX collapse, and Canada's stringent cryptocurrency regulatory environment. By 2023, WonderFi had become a leading cryptocurrency platform in the Canadian market.
However, he believes that achieving success in Canada is not the company's ultimate goal. WonderFi originally aimed to grow into a global enterprise and was seen as a strategic entry point into the Canadian market, which is why the acquisition was completed for CAD 250 million. Samaroo pointed out that Canada has long-standing structural issues that restrict the scaling of businesses, including insufficient venture capital, a weak public market, fragmented regulation, and declining attractiveness of entrepreneurial returns.
The challenges are even more pronounced for the cryptocurrency industry. Samaroo stated that after the QuadrigaCX incident, Canadian regulators established one of the strictest cryptocurrency regulatory frameworks globally, which, while intended to protect investors, has also increased operational costs for businesses. International trading platforms such as Binance, OKX, Bybit, and Gemini have previously entered the Canadian market only to exit later. He believes that Canadian cryptocurrency regulations are not only strict but also compounded by the issue of a fragmented securities regulatory system, leading to increased financing costs for businesses, greater operational complexity, and diminished interest from overseas investors.
Samaroo indicated that WonderFi is not an isolated case; many tech companies in Canada have experienced a similar trajectory: growing locally until they hit a market ceiling, ultimately seeking overseas capital or strategic buyers. Founder Tobi Lütke has previously criticized the recurring phenomenon in Canada of "nurturing important companies only to send them overseas." Restrictions on business sales can easily become political statements, but the key to truly solving the problem is to establish a business environment that supports financing, expansion, and participation in global competition.
The acquisition of WonderFi was previously announced, with a transaction amount of approximately CAD 250 million. This deal also reflects the accelerating consolidation of the North American cryptocurrency industry, as U.S. platforms enter other markets through mergers and acquisitions.
