Yakovlev Explains Cryptocurrency Risks for Unqualified Investors
The risks of cryptocurrencies for unqualified investors in Russia are increasing amid a rise in fraud: in 2026, around 25 billion rubles were stolen from Russians. Fraudsters are targeting not large players, but ordinary users. Cybersecurity specialist Pavel Yakovlev noted that criminals do not attempt to hack the blockchain but manipulate people's trust, convincing them to transfer money or disclose account details. The main fraud schemes include: 1) Cryptocurrency arbitrage, where the victim is promised a return of about 20%, but one of the platforms turns out to be phishing; 2) Triangles on classified ad sites, where the buyer loses money, and the cryptocurrency seller risks becoming involved in a criminal case; 3) Fake video calls through counterfeit versions of Zoom or Google Meet, where fraudsters gain access to personal data; 4) Fake tokens with interest, luring users to phishing sites. Dmitry Isakov emphasized that newcomers are particularly vulnerable due to the lack of restrictions on purchasing cryptocurrency, perceiving it as akin to a bank deposit, although the level of risk is significantly different.
