Banco Santander Holds $4.3 Million in Bitcoin
Banco Santander, Spain's largest bank, has revealed that it holds 129,615 shares of BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT), valued at a total of $4.3 million, according to a filing with the SEC. This indirect exposure to Bitcoin, chosen over direct ownership, allows the bank to avoid the technical constraints associated with holding private keys. Currently, Bitcoin is trading around $63,833, down 0.2% over the past 24 hours.
Openbank, Santander's digital subsidiary, has allowed its customers to buy Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies for a year, and the bank is adopting a more open communication approach regarding digital assets. The exposure through IBIT enables Santander to test the market without committing heavy internal resources, an approach followed by many financial institutions after the approval of spot Bitcoin ETFs in the United States in January 2024.
BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust currently manages $46.9 billion in assets, reflecting institutional appetite for regulated exposure to Bitcoin. U.S. Bitcoin ETFs have accumulated over $83 billion in assets under management, with BlackRock, Fidelity, and Morgan Stanley among the leading managers.
Santander is not alone in this movement, as more banks and pension funds are reporting positions in these products since the approval of Bitcoin ETFs. This development indicates that European financial institutions are aligning with their American counterparts, with an increasing integration of Bitcoin into the portfolios of major banking institutions.
