Huawei Faces Criminal Trial in Brooklyn, USA
Huawei began its trial in Brooklyn on Wednesday, facing charges of stealing trade secrets, violating sanctions, and bank fraud. Prosecutors described the company as a "criminal organization" during opening statements. The prosecution alleges that Huawei has harmed American businesses and abused the financial system over the past twenty years, conspiring to steal trade secrets from five U.S. companies, including source code for Cisco routers and mobile testing technology from T-Mobile. Defense attorney Brian Heberlig dismissed the charges, stating that the case should be viewed as a competitive dispute rather than a conspiracy, and criticized the prosecution for cherry-picking isolated incidents, arguing that the cases involving Cisco and T-Mobile do not represent the entire company. The lawsuit is based on RICO allegations, with the prosecution claiming that Huawei used Skycom in Hong Kong to obtain goods prohibited for export to Iran and transferred funds through the global banking system. Huawei denies all charges, and the case has been delayed for years, with the company currently trying to establish a significant presence in an AI chip ecosystem independent of U.S. technology in Beijing.
