JPMorgan CEO Says U.S. Economy Is Strong, Prepared for 40% Stock Market Drop
JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon stated in an exclusive interview with The Wall Street Journal that the U.S. economy is strong, with corporate profits rising, low unemployment rates, and overall leverage not being high, calling it a "good time." However, he pointed out that several potential risks are accumulating, including persistent "sticky" inflation for five years, large fiscal deficits, and geopolitical uncertainties. Dimon emphasized that predicting the exact timing and triggers of an economic downturn is extremely difficult, as recessions often result from a combination of various factors that are hard to assess accurately. Regarding the bank's response strategy, Dimon stated that JPMorgan will conduct in-depth analyses of various risks to ensure it can withstand shocks under changing interest rates and inflation or stagflation, while continuing to serve its clients. He made it clear that the bank is prepared for extreme scenarios such as a 40% drop in the stock market and a two to three times widening of bond credit spreads, rather than guessing when these scenarios might occur. Dimon concluded that an economic downturn will eventually come, but the specific combination of triggering events is something "no one can guess today."
