Trump Blames Ukraine for Rising Diesel Prices in the U.S.
U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright announced record diesel prices in the U.S., reaching $5.89 per gallon, due to the shutdown of Russian oil refineries as a result of Ukrainian drone attacks. Retail diesel prices in the U.S. have hit their highest level since mid-2022, surpassing the peak levels seen at the beginning of the war with Iran. Wright noted that environmental laws closing refineries and coal mines also impacted prices. He emphasized that Russia, previously a significant exporter of diesel fuel, is no longer exporting it and has begun importing gasoline. A journalist pointed out that Russia could have continued exporting if it had not attacked Ukraine. Earlier, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also cited Ukrainian strikes on Russian energy as a cause of the energy crisis. Russia has extended its ban on diesel exports until September 30 amid Ukrainian attacks. Diesel reserves in the U.S. have fallen to historic lows, while Europe has started purchasing fuel from Mexico.
